Why Heat Exchanger Tubes Choice Matters and How to Specify Them

Material selection for heat exchanger tubes determines thermal efficiency, corrosion resistance, and long-term maintenance costs. Seamless heat-exchanger tubes to ASTM A179 or BS 3059 are ideal for high-pressure steam condensers and evaporators because of uniform metallurgical properties and tight dimensional control. For corrosive fluids, select alloyed or stainless grades and consider cold-drawn precision tubes for tight-fit tube-sheets. Define service conditions clearly: maximum temperature, pressure, fluid chemistry, allowable corrosion rate, and required tube OD/ID tolerances.

Specify non-destructive testing (eddy current, hydrostatic) and tube finishing (pickling, passivation) for performance assurance. Request vendor samples of straightness, ovality, and surface finish to ensure smooth tube expansion and effective bonding with tube sheets.

Provide installation guidance: use IBR/plant-approved tube materials for boilers; for shell-and-tube exchangers, recommend tube expansion procedures and inspection intervals to avoid premature failures and maintain thermal performance.
